DTG vs. DTF Printing

DTG (direct-to-garment) applies water-based inks directly onto fabrics, while DTF (direct-to-film) prints on a transfer film that is then heat-pressed onto garments. Unlike DTF printing, DTG is particularly appropriate for natural fabrics such as cotton, bamboo, linen, or similar fabric blends. This is because the ink adheres more effectively to the fibers of natural fabrics than to those of synthetic fabrics.

Both DTF and DTG products are durable and resistant to cracking. DTG prints feel softer and lighter since they bond directly with the fabric, whereas DTF prints can feel heavier or more ‘plasticky’ due to the adhesive powder. DTF printers are typically cheaper upfront but DTG can have lower ongoing ink costs. For everyday apparel and bold, straightforward designs, DTG is an excellent choice.
